How to download torrents & how to set up Plex to stream video from your computer to your phone, TV, or tablet

Software to download

qBittorrent

qBittorrent download: https://www.qbittorrent.org/download

qBittorrent is a torrent client that allows you to download files from other people on the Internet using magnet links or .torrent files.

Note: On Mac, it’s recommended you use Transmission instead: https://transmissionbt.com/ qBittorrent will run on a Mac, but it isn’t well-supported.

Alternative to qBittorrent: Tribler

Tribler download: https://www.tribler.org/index.html

Tribler is a semi-experimental torrent client that hides your IP address so your Internet Service Provider can’t catch you torrenting. The downside is it’s slower and torrents with few seeders may not download at all.

Plex

To use Plex, you’ll need to download Plex Media Server for your computer: https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/

You’ll also need to sign up for a Plex account: https://www.plex.tv/sign-up/

Once you’re set up on your computer and you create an account, download the app for your phone and login to your account on the phone app. That will let you stream TV shows and movies from your computer to your phone as long as your computer is running and your computer and phone are both connected to your home wi-fi.

If you have a smart TV also on your home wi-fi, you can either download the Plex app for your TV or cast to your TV using the phone app.

Sites where you can search for stuff to download

The Pirate Bay

https://thepiratebay.org/

Important: while browsing The Pirate Bay, I recommend you use an ad blocker like uBlock Origin Lite for Chrome and Edge or uBlock Origin for Firefox. There are invasive and deceptive ads all over the site.

To download a torrent from The Pirate Bay, you can click on the little magnet icon () and let your browser open qBittorrent. Or you can right-click the magnet icon, select “Copy link address”, and then paste the link in qBittorrent by going to File → Add Torrent Link…

Tips: larger file sizes usually mean better video quality. “SE” means “seeders”. Torrents with more seeders are easier to download and are more popular. A green skull icon () next to a torrent is a good thing. It indicates the uploader is a VIP. A pink skull icon () is also a good thing. It indicates the uploader is Trusted.

BTDig

https://btdig.com

This site is less convenient to navigate than The Pirate Bay, but it sometimes has stuff The Pirate Bay doesn’t. Unfortunately, the number of seeders is not shown, so you have to try downloading a torrent to find out if it has any seeders. (If a torrent has no seeders, there is no way to download it.)

To download, click the magnet link and open it in qBittorrent. Or right-click the magnet link, select “Copy link address”, and paste the link into qBittorrent by going to File → Add Torrent Link…
